Phu Wiang Dinosaur Park and Ubol Ratana Dam

A Day Trip to Phu Wiang Dinosaur Museum north-east of Khon Kaen returning around Ubol Ratana Dam.

After travelling about 45 kilometres west out of Khon Kaen on Route AH16 we turned north onto Route 2038, headed to the Phu Wiang Dinosaur Museum.

The museum has an emphasis on geology as much as dinosaurs. Isaan is a ‘dinosaur hotspot’ and dinosaur parks and museums abound in the Isaan Provinces.

Ubol Ratana Reservoir

We left the museum and headed north to Nong Bua Lamphu Province. Route 3002 across the top end of Ubol Ratana Reservoir is a reasonabl good rural road in a very rural part of Thailand.

Ubol Ratana Reservoir is huge – nearly 400km2.  It is a multi-purpose impoundment of the Nam Phong River being used for electricity generation (including a floating solar array), irrigation, flood control, transportation, fisheries, and as tourist attraction. The water that flows out of the reservoir eventually flows into the Mekong River.

It ran dry for the first time in 2016 during an extended drought.

Fishing

The Khon Kaen to Khon Kaen loop is about 240 kilometres.
