Speed Week is run annually by Dry Lake Racers Australia (DLRA) on Lake Gairdner, remote South Australia. The 2025 edition (the 35th) was held between 3-8 March 2025.
It’s a 2300 kilometre drive from Perth to Lake Gairdner via Hyden-Norseman Road, Eyre Highway and Mt Ive access road.
The Hyden Norseman Road saves about 100 kilometres and more than an hour on the journey to Norseman. It’s a good gravel road.
The Eyre Highway is an interesting drive for those who want it to be. The drive into Lake Gairdner from the bitumen at Minnipa is an adequate dirt road, with occasionally short rough sections.
Friendly Atmosphere
Speed Week is known for its friendly atmosphere and coooperation among participants. Information and some commentary was broadcast over UHF Channel 15.

Chatting With Neighbours
I was sitting in the shade chatting with neighbors of a similar vintage. One mentioned that his career was on motorcycles and listed an impressive array of competition involvement and then asked about my interest in motorsport. Apart from power dinghy racing, offload racing, cross country rallying and, given the surroundings, I casually mentioned that many years previously I had been the Manager of Roscoe McGlashan’s Aussie Invader program – eventually recounting the tale of an incident at Walgett on the Darling River when the truck transporting the Aussie Invader jet car broke down. What to do! The rear canvas was rolled up, the jet was fired up and the truck was once again mobile. The scene of a fire breathing monster entering town was too much for some people.
I’m not sure they believed me.
- Packing a parachute.
Impound
Cars/Bikes that record a potential record-breaking time are placed in Impound prior to doing a second run.
USA Involvement
Team USA talked a lot but didn’t do a run in the time we were there.
