As the name indicates this road starts in Carnarvon and connects with Mullewa 450 kilometres to the south-south-east, The road itself is a little longer at 675 kilometres.
About 50% of the 173 kilometres between Carnarvon and Gascoyne Junction is sealed. It is gravel (unsealed) for 298 kilometres from Gascoyne Junction to Murchison. The 201 kilometres from Murchison south to Mullewa is mostly sealed.
The CMR is an easy drive but it is remote and conditions can be extreme in summer.
The track passes through Murchison Settlement and the Oasis Roadhouse here is the only refuel opportunity on the drive south of Gascoyne Junction. There are a number of little-known and very much under-rated attractions and features along CMR including Bilung Pool, Wooramel River Gorges, Pioneer Well 19 and Erabiddy Bluff.
The CMR crosses the Murchison River south of the Settlement on the new (2016) Ballinyoo Bridge. Until the original bridge was replaced in 2016 it was the oldest comcrete bridge in Western Australia.
