Lucky Bay

Lucky Bay is in the Cape Le Grand National Park, 30 kilometres south-east of Esperance.

Matthew Flinders (1774-1817) named it on 9 January 1802.

Finding himself amongst the myriad islands of the Archipelago of the Recherche, and seeing no possibility of reaching a space of clear water in which to anchor during the night and no prospect of shelter under any of the islands, Flinders adopted the hazardous measure of steering directly before the wind toward the mainland. He anchored in this bay overnight, sheltering from the dangers of the surrounding islands.
