Kalbarri

Kalbarri is one of Western Australia’s leading holiday resorts with ocean beaches, sheltered estuary waters and some of the best gorge scenery in the State.

It was in this area that mutineers from the Dutch East India trading vessel Batavia were marooned in 1629. In 1712 survivors of the shipwreck Zuytdorp also landed in the area. The aborigines of the area display some European features.

Kalbarri was declared a town in 1951.

Kalbarri is an aboriginal word for an edible seed and was also used as a man’s name according to a Murchison district vocabulary compiled by Daisy Bates about 1913.

The reports of the various trips, tours and travels on the Adventures website have a lot of information about place names – their naming and features – toponymy. More information.
