Wiluna

The Mardu people of the Wiluna area were among the last people to come out of the bush – as late as the 1960s.

Wiluna is an historic gold mining town, now the starting point for journeys along the Canning Stock Route and Gunbarrel Highway. However, when the stock route was created, Wiluna was the destination for cattle travelling from the Kimberley. Find out why.

The name Wiluna probably comes from the local aboriginal word ‘weeluna’ or ‘weeloona’ which meant either ‘bush curlew’ or ‘place of winds’.

D’Orsogna Smallgoods, a leading manufacturer and supplier of meat products across Australia, was established in Wiluna  in the 1930s before being moved to West Perth in 1949.
