McDermid Rock is 180 kilometres east-north-east from Hyden along the Hyden Norseman Road three kilometres before the Victoria Rock Road heads off north to Coolgardie.

There are three ‘waves’ on the north-east part of the rock, facing south-east.

The ubiquitous explorer Frank Hann (8146-1921) recorded in his fieldbook on 16 September 1901 that he had discovered and named this rock, however, he did not state after whom he named it.

A Department of Land and Surveys Trig Station was established on the highest point of this outcrop in November 1980.
